Momentum is the ability of a price trend, whether increasing or falling, to continue moving forward.
Rather than spotting continuation or reversal patterns, momentum investors seek to capitalize on a trend.
The goal is to profit by getting long on asset classes that are growing and shorting when the pattern for a rising pattern appears to have peaked.
Moving average convergence divergence (MACD) and relative strength index (RSI) indicators are commonly used by momentum investors to assess the strength or weakness of market trends.
The MACD indicator is used to determine whether the bullish or bearish trend is strengthening or weakening. Meanwhile, the Relative Strength Index (RSI) is used to determine if an instrument is overbought or oversold.
